Las inundaciones en Houston es algo común durante la temporada de lluvias o durante el paso de poderoso huracanes. El Departamento de Obras Públicas de la ciudad ha proporcionado la siguiente lista que abarca intersecciones o pasos subterráneos que son propensos a este tipo de problemática.
El meteorólogo del condado de Harris, Jeff Linder, explica que las calles se inundan, puesto a que las tuberías subterráneas que trasladan el agua de las calles hacía los ríos pueden contener hasta dos pulgadas de agua por hora, sin embargo, en una ciudad como Houston puede caer de 4 a 6 pulgadas de lluvia en una hora, una cantidad mayor a la que los caños pueden manejar.
De igual forma, explica que una forma efectiva de mitigar el efecto de las intensas lluvias en las calles sería reconstruir los pequeños sistemas de sumideros en los vecindarios más antiguos para incrementar la capacidad de drenaje.
